How to get success with cozies

Sometimes I piss somebody off, and I don’t even know why. Has that ever happened to you?

Back in 2010, I created a Danish blog called “write and get rich” in Danish, and a Danish writer and author of several historical novels left a furious comment.

I don’t know what triggered her. Her remarks were personal, the ‘going after the man, not the ball,’ kind of remarks.

I found one of her books on my shelf and threw it out after that experience.

You don’t want to piss off your readers. And sometimes it’s the strangest things they turn sour over.

I did a lot of research about what makes cozy readers put down the book. I share it in a report, neatly ordered so you easily can pick the bits that are relevant to you.

Even if you’re using plots somebody else wrote, you’ll gain insight and save yourself from a lot of angry readers by knowing what they hate and what they want.

He ate her fly

Do you have pets?

Yesterday, my dog Nefnef ran around our living room for at least ten minutes, snapping after a fly without catching it.

Suddenly I noticed that both Frostie (our cat) and Nefnef were watching the fly that now was at the window. With a fast punch with his paws, Frostie grabbed the fly and ate it.

Nefnef was flabbergasted. It was HER fly! He’d snapped it, that little rat.

She sniffed his mouth, and searched his pillow to see if he’d left anything for her. But no. Nothing.

After a few minutes, she gave up and curled up on her blanket to get some sleep.

I could learn a trick or two from Frostie. Nefnef never gives up when it comes to nagging me.

And yes, you too can learn from your villain.

Hitting a block

This morning I resolved a writing block. I couldn’t get started on the scene yesterday, because my shadow journals didn’t fit with the following scene.

I checked the outlines for both scenes. Something had to change. Either the outlines, or the shadow journals.

When I write shadow journals, I go with the flow and just write down what I feel when I’m in that person’s head. I trusted that feeling. So I had to change the outline for the following scene instead. It didn’t fit with my characters, and I would have had to use force to make them do what I demanded. I didn’t want that.

I would never have figured that out without a shadow journal. This is one of the best tools, I’ve ever found, and it helps me on so many levels.

I wrote this mail straight after this morning’s journaling, and now I’m off to write the scene. Unstuck, unblocked, and now with a great idea for the following scene. Thanks to my shadow journal.

Author inspired to 28 books

Okay, I must admit that I’m very proud of the review Eibhlin MacIntosh gave my book “Divide and Conquer”.

Some of the things she wrote include…

“It’s not the same old ‘how to get 5 articles/books/videos out of one idea.’ Far from it.”

And…

“Using Britt’s suggestions, I produced a list of 28 short, nonfiction books (in one sub-niche) that I can write with little or no research. Many can be written in a single day.”

My latest product – Shadow Journal

You probably know that I’m a huge fan of James Scott Bell.

He publishes a blog post every Sunday, and I usually read them and learn.

One Sunday last year, he mentioned a “shadow story” and for me that was instant attraction. It made so much sense to me that I began using it in my own work.

Soon after I developed my own tweak, and Shadow Journals were born.

Now I write them daily, and it meant increased motivation to write, a better understanding of all my characters, including the villain.

What’s more, I began using my shadow journals to warm up readers to buy my book. People loved it (and so did I, of course).

I’m really excited about this ebook. I honestly believe that it can make your fiction sparkle and add a new depth to your stories. I know it did to mine.

Stupid me, forgot the most important

I got an email from Margi, who said:

“Just to say that I followed the lead for the very useful book promotion course within the time span, but it was not ten dollars! Great shame because it looks excellent…”

I told her to use the coupon code I’d sent her. Then I went looking for the code. Erm… After ten minutes or so, I finally figured it out. I’d only sent it to one person in private, and I remembered it as if I’d sent it out to everybody.

Okay, so you only have today to get this deal, and now let me share the part that Margi read AND the coupon code.

You probably know the feeling of confusion when you’ve finished writing a book.

Now what?

Yes, sure, you need to edit, proof, and publish it, but then what? Market it? Pay for Facebook ads?

What if it still doesn’t sell?

That’s a nightmare for a lot of people, and writing books becomes an expensive hobby.

If you’ve ever written a nonfiction book that hardly sold, only to see other, similar books ranking well on the best-seller lists, you know how frustrating it can be. Grrrrrr!

I just finished a book yesterday

So I’m in that situation now. I’ve written it in a new category under a new pen name. I want it to do well.

How do I increase its odds?

I wanted to get the answer from someone I knew had published successful nonfiction books, so it was only natural to turn to Ian Stables, who’s made a Udemy course about the top three things that sell most Kindle nonfiction books.

I snapped it up for only $10. Normally it goes for $145.

In the course, Ian goes over the three things that he found helped selling books. Optimizing these three areas means that your book continues to sell and stays in the best-sellers. No further promotion needed.

Give your book the best start possible. The price is still low for the next 18 hours.

Oh shiny

My husband shops for groceries every Monday and Thursday.

We have a tradition. He calls home when he’s leaving the shop, and Nefnef and I go out to greet him. Then Nefnef jumps up and says “hello” and checks out Cyril’s bag to see what he’s bringing home for goodies.

Except when there’s a cat out there. That’s her “shiny”.

We all have them, right? It’s so easy to get distracted, and we want to do something different or want new things all the time.

But there’s one constant in all this. One thing every normal human being on the planet strives for:

Happiness.

How would you like to contribute with your take on this? What if you could spread happiness to as many readers as possible?

Now, you can. Because I’ve written a guide about how to write a happiness book yourself. This is, of course, a highly popular category on Amazon.
